Ask me a question, any question. I will do my best to provide you with a relevant answer.
I will answer one question per day for as long as they last.
Comments are screened and will remain that way. Let me know if you're okay with being mentioned when I post the answer.

It's a conversation that got kind-of started at someone else's LJ, but it was at best tangentially related. So I figured I'd start it here.

What do people think of mandatory reporting laws? Of the intent behind their creation? Of their implementation?

I have discovered a situation where it hurts more to hit oneself on the hand with one's poi than to hit one's head. Any guesses? Yup, silly me went outside to play with my poi and see if I retained any of my nifty new tricks from Saturday. It's 35 outside and was sprinkling snow. My hands were burning cold in the first place and hitting them with a tennis ball was beyond unpleasant. Worth it, but painful.

Answer to my question: yes, I did retain the new tricks. Not that I'll get to practice them much in the near future. Ooh, I wonder how many wierd looks I'd get for taking poi to the firehouse, they have a roof and no wind in the garage, or the bingo hall..

I'm reminded to be thankful that it was warm out (almost 60) on Saturday when I was outside playing with poi for (I think) over an hour. It was great fun and I had wonderful company. Thank you [livejournal.com profile] tcepsa

I got home from Arisia safely. Plausibly even sanely, though that was aided significantly by driving out from under the rain. The last bits of rainyness were causing my eyes to cross badly and that's just not good when driving a little metal box at greater than 60 mph.

At any rate, it's now long past bedtime and I'm going to try to sleep. Here's hoping it works.

It was a fabulous weekend. I'm very glad that I went up. More later, plausibly tomorrow... Damn, I forgot to take pictures of the fascinating stairwell.. Hopefully someone else will have posted some and I can link to them.

A double chocolate decadance cookie should not be dinner.
Especially not at a quarter to four in the morning.
And now the question is: Do I go to sleep, or do I just give up and stay up all night since I'm mostly there already?

Some backstory: while I was still in Seattle I traded phones with a friend because he couldn't hear well enough to hold a conversation with his phone. I told him I'd send the manual when I found it...

And so I found a phone manual, packed it up and mailed it to him.

And then we talked on the phone...

"So I got the package you sent me, and the note where you said you'd been up way too late. And the cell-phone instruction manual, which is kind-of funny because they're to somebody else's phone..."

Oh, dear.
I guess I really was up too late.

I'm not really fond of hot weather.
I'm even less fond of humidity.

The reason for this is simple.
I've been drinking 2 to 2.5 quarts of water daily. This is on the order of two or three times what I routinely drink in Seattle even in the summertime.

All the secondary indicators I know to watch say I'm still dehydrated. Including the ones I'm not accustomed to noticing, like the fact that crying hurts because my tears are more salinated than they ought to be. The only one I'm not noticing at the moment is the dehydration headache I get when I've let it go way too far.

I suppose I need to be drinking even more than I have been.
(which is not really suprising given that even in Seattle I should be drinking 2 to 3 quarts daily, I just wasn't doing it)

I'm reminded of the summer I spent two weeks in July camping and doing manual labor in Florida. They provided us with 2 liter canteens. I drank 3 to 4 of them per day... And then I got yelled at by my counselor for needing to stop at the privies every time we passed them. (I'm sure it didn't help her mood that when we needed to go in the middle of the night we were supposed to wake her up so she could walk us up to the bathroom... I learned pretty quickly to function as though I was backpacking and forgo modern facilities in favor of the woods out back of the tent)

I know I post here so often....
That said, I know that a while back I read an article contrasting the "standard American" standards of active listening and those prevalent in either groups of geeks or the masses at sci-fi cons. (I know there's considerable overlap there, but I'm pretty sure it was one or the other.
I'm taking a communication class this quarter and the prof said he'd be interested in seeing it... and now I can't find it! Bother!
Can anybody help me?
(i'd almost bet money that I saw it on memegarden's blog at some point, but it's such a pain in the tush to go looking through back journal posts)

We're going to see Batman at the IMAX this Friday
(yes, that is tomorrow... sorry for the short notice)
If you want to meet us there you should call the house or email for specifics...
I think the evening showing is 7:15... at any rate, the one that's near that time is the one we'll be seeing.

Leaving...

One of our neighbors is moving. I've been in this neighborhood for about six years now, but didn't really know them very well at all - just waves and nods, mostly.

So I heard the moving van pull up this morning. When I got home this evening I happened to spy my neighbor (he's like 85 years old - I don't know exactly, but he's old, talks and moves very slowly) standing on the sidewalk next to the van. I walked over and shook his hand, and we started talking. I asked him where he was moving, and he said, "Back to Germany."

I had been stationed in Germany for two years while in the military, so I lit up, and commented about how beautiful the country was, and inquired if he was going back because he missed it.

"No," he answered me. "I'm going back because I've seen this before."

It is a bit longer, but UncleDark's LJ had a cut for more at this point and I found it much more effective to be left at this point to stew for a bit before moving on. So, since I don't know how to do an LJ cut, I'm just posting the link and y'all can follow it if you like.

I want to go home.
Honey, your home doesn't exist any more, people aren't nice.

Here, Tired, Found an old friend's journal today, didn't know she had one...
Miss them.
Need to go cook dinner, Need to go study for the PCAT (Pharmacy entrance exam), Need to go work on my headspace and such...
Want to spin wool into yarn, Want to knit on any one of a number of projects, Want to call people and catch up with what's going on in life, Want to have sister's wedding go without incident next week (technically week after next, but close enough)
Going to go cook dinner, not sure what else will happen...
Guess I'll find out after dinner

Mint

Do any of you that are more herbally inclined than I know if mint is inherently antibacterial?
I ask this because I have had a bottle of open mint tea on my desk for 2 weeks now and it has not grown anything that I can see.
It was sweetened with sugar, so they are not not growing for lack of food and when I went to dump it out tonight, the bottle was not pressurized at all and smelled the same as it did when it was new... That is to say "Damn, I thought I'd checked to make sure it was unsweetened, well that was a waste of money"
At any rate, hope all is well with all of you, lord knows my life is busy, but mostly that's a good thing. Will be seeing lots of you out at the ranch this weekend.
(some exceptions, pout...)
And skating tomorrow! Yay! Testing in boots that don't fit, oh, joy... Hopefully they can be stretched. We'll find out about that next week.
I'm rambling and it's LATE, so I shall run off to bed.
Good night...

I'm bored... Felt like making a long post and what better way to do that than maps?
Yes, I did put in states and a country that I merely passed through rather than actually visiting... but hey, it made the map prettier!

Miss all my friends from home and a the new ones made over the break.
I think i'm going to make a snowman once i get off my lazy but enough to put on clothing warm enough i won't freeze!
